Help Me Out Here

Howdy, all. I have to send Diego some specs for the cover to the second book.*  I am thinking this book should have Wash, Jesse, Tommy, Luis, and Rosie on it.  It has been my experience that every now and then you all send me the name of someone and say "This person would make an excellent so-and-so." And I'm usually left openmouthed and saying "where were you when I was sending stuff to Diego?"

So, here's your big chance. I'm not going to completely re-tool the characters, as I'm pretty happy with his take on them. However, some of these characters I really did have a tough time coming up with models for. For instance, none of the models I used for Wash were particularly Irish. And as you can see from the first cover, the paintings Diego does are pretty detailed. So I'd like to beef up some of the model examples I send him.

I'm not particularly good at this, being sort of clueless when it comes to pop culture and such. So it's hard for me to come up with faces for Diego to use as models.

Any suggestions? I could really use them. Let's make a sort of game out of it. Who would you cast for "Five Dollar Mail: The Movie"? They do not have to be current or even alive. I'm looking for pictures to send and artist. Their current box office draw is irrelevant. (We had a party once, drank too many mojitos, and proceeded to cast ourselves in a movie. It was fun. And sad. Man, are our egos out of control. )

*I may have mentioned elsewhere on the site that I'll be putting out a second book right on the heels of the first. So, to bring you all up to speed, I have way too much content for just one book. It would be cumbersome and cost prohibitive to do it all in one big toe stubber. So to keep production costs down (and ultimately reader costs), we're going to do two cheaper books. Evidently, if you go over a certain page count, things start getting disproportionately more expensive. So we're planning on timing it in such a way that we can divvy it up into two sections of roughly a hundred chapters each. There's already talk of doing a third right after that, to tie it up into a nice neat trilogy. And I'm not going to tell you who will be on the cover of that one.

Anyways, have a good week. See you Friday.

I don't know what's going on here, Katrie's comment went away as I was messing around over here trying to answer it. Fortunately, I have a copy. Sorry about that, Katrie.

Her comment is:

Okay... I'm probably gonna end up with a fairly long list here, just to throw a few ideas out... >.> All links will be to IMDB if possible. Their main profile pic will probably *NOT* be the one that I think looks most like the character...

James McAvoy http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0564215/
Cillian Murphy http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0614165/
Michael Fassbender http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1055413/

All three have the kinda smile I picture with Wash. (mostly when they have their hair just a little longer...)

The only person I can really think of is a young Antonio Banderas. I never really had as much of a picture in my head for him. I think the current picture is wonderful of him, and have been using it usually when I try to picture him.

Daniel Radcliffe a bit in his Harry Potter roll or Andrew Garfield (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1940449/)

Chris Evans http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0262635/
Chris Pine http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1517976/

Both of them have the blue eyes (and in a lot of current rolls the blonde hair) I always pictured Jesse with, and give them proper long pretty hair... and well. >.> Pretty. ^_^ They're also a bit more wiry than some of the other big-actors these days.

Rosie I'm no good at because of her name I can't help but picture my cousin... and my cousin is Chinese. >.> :)

Sooooooo, there's my 2 cents of what I sometimes picture, or when "pressured" ::teasing:: to picture that I come up with. :)

MY comment, which also got screwed up is:

Hi, Katrie!

Thanks for the suggestions and the links! I think these are all pretty good suggestions, particularly the Wash ones. They all look different, but they could all be Wash, if that makes sense. Cillian Murphy is almost too good looking, but then, Wash was probably quite cute before he got most of it worn off him. Michael Fassbender looks like he's got pretty much the perfect smile, though!

Yeah, Luis is a tough one, isn't he? For the sorry pics I sent them, Diego and Lizz both did a great job on him. Despite my sad attempts to describe him.

You know, I did think about Radcliff for Tommy, but I really didn't want Tommy to look that much like Harry Potter! :-DDD The other guy Garfield isn't a bad pic, though. Throw some glasses on him and give him a less polished haircut and he could work. I like that he looks kind of "average". He's cute, but he doesn't seem to have that "I'm an actor" look about him.

I can see either of your Jesse choices working pretty well, too. I'm sitting here looking at them while visualizing long, straight hair on them and I can see it.

I don't know what I'm going to do about Rosie. I'm not finding what I need online. It's sort of a case of "I'll know her when I see her". I do have a very nice black and white piece I commissioned for the book... the books will have some extras...that is perfect, but I will need some photos to send Diego, and I don't really have that yet.

Thank you for your efforts! They will go into "the collection." And it was just plain fun going through them!

For Louis I have always kinda pictured CHARLIE RIVERA MASSO from his days in Menudo

Elijah Wood in glasses would make a great Tommy imo.

For Rosie...I keep getting a mental image of a very young Shirley Jones only with dark hair in pig tails.

and I kinda see maybe Hugh Lorie with collar length hairs for Wash.

and maybe Ryan Hansen as Jesse

Amy, those are good suggestions (although I can't find a picture of a young Shirley Jones, I imagine she was cute). I seem too remember another suggestion for Wood as Tommy, too (might have been my own, I don't remember). He'd actually be a pretty good choice!

I don't know why I didn't think of delving into old pictures of Menudo, but that's brilliant. :-DDD That guy would work.

Your Jesse pic is a good one as well. See? I don't even know who that guy is. That's what kind of trips me up, I don't know who a lot of these people are, so I'm at a disadvantage when it comes to dredging up pictures.

You are not the only person to suggest Hugh Lorie for Wash. I can kind of see it!

What gets me is that I can see them all so clearly in my mind, but trying to "cast" them is pretty difficult. Ironically, Saint was probably one of the easier ones to cast. I guess he's a real distinct "type" of guy. Some of the other guys, not so much (at least the way I see them).

It's very cool to me to see you you all "see" them.

Thanks for the help! Much appreciated!
